In the old days Icelanders used Askur for their food, each member of the family got his food for the day in it and it was HIS or HER private storage and plate for food at the same time. Askur is a bowl made of wood with lid on, often carved. People sat on the beds to eat and kept their Askur on the floor/under the bed when not in use, no real kitchen in those days. This was when people lived in the old houses I was telling you about in this post.
